Advocacy Update Regarding Arterial Duplex and ABI’s Being Recognized as Mutually Exclusive by Insurance Providers

By Joshua Lee, FSVU, MBA, RVT posted Fri June 12, 2020 12:23:46 PM

We have heard from SVU members concerning Aetna, UHC and their seeing arterial duplex and ABI’s as mutually exclusive. The SVU Advocacy Committee and its members have been in contact and fighting this specific battle for approximately a year now.

Last year, we were successful in gaining Aetna’s attention to this matter, and they now allow duplex and ABI together for specific codes such as post angioplasty and post stent codes. We are still working very hard to open their eyes and convince them to completely overturn their new policy that places duplex and ABI in a mutually exclusive category.

This year, SVU and the Society for Vascular Surgery (SVS) have teamed up to write a joint letter that was submitted just prior to the COVID pandemic. We are awaiting a response to this letter and hope to assist in re-writing their policy, as it is currently incorrect.

Thank you to all our members who have raised concerns about this practice, and thank you to everyone who is helping our Advocacy Committee continue to be the front line of defense for these types of insurance and policy corrections. Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions you may have regarding this or other advocacy issues. You may also submit issues or questions via our new Advocacy Reporting Form.

Best regards,

Josh Lee, BS, RVT
Advocacy Committee Chair
