What I'm Looking Forward to Learning at the 2016 SVU Annual Conference

For those of you who don’t know too much about me, I am Kruti Soni. I’m currently a student at Rush University, enrolled in the vascular ultrasound program. Since I mentioned Rush, I have to give a shout-out to all of my amazing teachers there for teaching us so much, in such little time! I just started my clinical rotations and I have to say, it is exhausting! As excited as I was for my rotations, I realized there is still so much I don’t know. While I was ready to apply all the theory that I learned, I learned that it is not always what it looks like.

While Rush University did an amazing job in teaching me so much about the vascular world, there is still so much more I have to learn. Many people tell me that it’ll come with experience but I’m just so eager, I can’t wait or contain my excitement! I’m looking forward to the SVU Annual Conference 2016 because I am convinced that I will learn a ton from simply being there and attending lectures, all in 3 days! Don't forget to download the handy-dandy Eventsential app and select the 2016 SVU Annual Conference on your smartphone. It provides you with access to the daily schedule of the 2016 conference in Chicago, and so much more!

I hope to attend lectures where I think my newly-learned skills need some more confidence, such as:

  • The hands on lecture for “Identifying Soleal and Gastroc Veins” by Kayla Wieseckel. I’ve realized during my clinical experience that it is much harder to find the soleal sinuses because there is no accompanying artery and because everyone’s soleal veins are various different sizes.
  • I want to go to as many hands-on sessions as I can, because that is the best way to learn for me. Along with the soleal and the gastroc lecture, I want to attend the TCD session by Joseph Hughes, “Celiac Trunk and Its Branches” by Laurie Lozanski (she’s one of my professors at Rush!), and finally, “Measuring Reflux” by Karen Burns. All of these sessions take place on Aug. 12th at 4:45-6pm.
  • I also want to attend “Session 11:  The Young Professional” moderated by Anne Jones on Aug. 13th, 8-9:15 am. This session will particularly help during my clinical rotations here in Chicago and out of town, in Boston!
  • I hope to learn about various kinds of pathologies as well, so I’ll have to attend various lectures talking about venous and arterial pathologies.

Finally, I hope to attend some sessions where I will learn about ergonomics and posture while performing an exam. The “Ergonomics Improving Work Posture” by Carolyn Coffman seems like it would be the perfect solution. I didn’t realize how important ergonomics were until I arrived to my first clinical rotation site. Many of the technologists I work with have busted shoulders and bad rotator cuffs because they’ve been in this profession for a very long time, and for the sake of completing an exam in a timely manner, they’ve harmed their own bodies. This taught me a very important lesson, to always protect yourself while helping others.
