Carotid Body Tumor

Hi everyone,
I just wanted to do a quick blog about Carotid Body Tumors. I have only had one case with a patient that had this condition since practicing vascular as a Sonographer. It was very interesting. The patient presented with symptoms of voice changes (hoarseness), mild difficulty swallowing at times, and a history of hypertension. The main reason for the vascular exam was that the doctor heard a bruit in the neck area of the patient and wanted to see if the patient had a stenosis.  After performing the ultrasound, I found out that the patient had a carotid body tumor. It presented as a mass between the bifurcation of the carotid. The mass reminded me of a thyroid appearance. It was highly vascular when I put the color Doppler on the mass. It was an interesting case.

Anyone else have any stories about carotid body tumors?

I just moved back from living and working at altitudes of 7,000 to 12,000 feet (which was beautiful), and I saw so many there after having only seen two or three over the previous thirty years. It seems that altitude stimulates the conditions that cause them to grow. Interesting.............

Thank you for sharing your experience with carotid body tumors! I have done one exam to rule out a carotid body tumor, but it was negative. It is great that you have seen one! My clinical instructor has only seen two in 20 years. They are pretty rare!
Hopefully more students have carotid body tumor stories to share!
