On December 7, 2013, the Hilton Caribe Hotel in San Juan, Puerto Rico became the scene for SVU’s, “Vascular Technology and Interpretation Course”. This program sold out at 120 attendees and many more were hoping to attend. The majority of the audience was from Puerto Rico, with a few others enjoying the island’s sunshine, hotel facilities and beach.

This 7.5 hour program was presented by the following SVU members: Steven Leers, MD, Vascular Surgeon from University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, who is also the Medical Director of the SVU Meetings Committee; Debbie Pirt, AS RVT FSVU, outgoing President of SVU; Patricia Poe, BS RVT FSVU, incoming President of SVU and Kathleen Palmieri, RVT FSVU, SVU Meetings Chair. This course granted 7.5 SVU CME credits to those who attended.

With only a one day program, we chose topics pertinent to requests from previous SVU Skills and Interpretation and RPVI programs. Ultrasound Essentials, such as, Optimizing Image Quality, Ergonomics, Hemodynamics with discussion on Waveform Interpretation, How to Obtain a Pertinent History prior to Vascular Exams, Performing Carotid Duplex exams, Carotid Interpretation Criteria and Standardization followed by case study examples and discussion. The afternoon program topics centered on Arterial Disease, Abdominal/Visceral disease with lectures including an Algorithm for evaluating patients with PAD, Physiologic Arterial Testing and Interpretation, Arterial Grafts and Stent, criteria and reporting, Renal U/S criteria and Evaluation of Aortic disease and EVAR follow up. Venous topics such as DVT and Venous Insufficiency were also presented.

We were very fortunate to have a live scanning session sponsored by DISS Puerto Rico. The DISS's Application and Senior Education Specialists, Angeles Perez was excellent in demonstrating venous insufficiency testing, carotid imaging and peripheral arterial imaging on a live model. This session was greatly enjoyed by both new and experienced attendees.

Due to the outstanding success of this program, SVU is considering returning to San Juan, Puerto Rico again in 2014.
