For many students, this may be the first time you are looking for employment as a professional. It can be very nerve-wracking to navigate not only first-time employment but also employment in the medical field. I have written a three-part series blog to provide some tips to help students prepare themselves for the job search process.
Topics I will cover include resume tips, helpful resources to use when looking for a job, and what employers look for when hiring someone new, including tips from technical directors. I hope that these tips will help students in their job search and I wish everyone the best of luck!
Job Search Part One - Resume Tips
When beginning the job search you need to make sure that you have a solid resume and cover letter. Your resume should include technical skills that you have learned on the job and while on externships or internships. Examples of what should be included on your resume are:
- Testing performed like cerebrovascular, TCD or TCI, physiologic, arterial and venous.
- Equipment that you are familiar with like Parks, Unetix, GE and Philips.
- Anything that you contributed to while in training such as was your lab accredited, did you help with QA and were you part of a team that improved processes or workflow.
- Your education and any certifications that you have received like SPI, expected date of when you will obtain your RVT and CPR or BLS.
- Any related professional experiences that you have been a part of this includes being an SVU member.
Having a mentor help you out with what to include on a resume is very helpful. I invited many of my co-workers to critique my resume until I felt that it was succinct and representative of my skills. While you're at it, if you are not on LinkedIn, you can join, post your resume and build connections with others in the field. SVU has a great LinkedIn Group that you can join and use to connect with professionals in the vascular field.
